NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale raised the Blackwell Cup the last 10 seasons it has been contested. Saturday, on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, is another opportunity as the No. 1 ranked Bulldogs face Penn (15) and Columbia (17). Racing begins at 9:20 a.m. with the third varsity.
The Blackwell Cup, which will not be streamed, is awarded in honor of George Engs Blackwell, an 1880 graduate of Columbia. The cup has been awarded since 1927, while the Elis have the most (47) wins. Penn and Yale traded the trophy almost exclusively, up until 2008 when Columbia won for the first time in 67 years. However, the Bulldogs have won every Blackwell Cups since 2010.
Yale, coming off a win in the Olympic Axe race with Dartmouth, has not lost a dual or triangular cup race since the 2014 Yale-Harvard Regatta. The Bulldogs top both the IRCA Varsity Eight and IRA Coaches polls conducted the first week of this month.
Penn was three seconds behind No. 9 Northeastern on the Charles River a few weeks ago racing for the Burk Cup, while last week's Childs Cup event with Princeton and Columbia was canceled. Columbia competed in the Alumni Cup on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., on April 2 and defeated Holy Cross and MIT while finishing almost 13 seconds behind Dartmouth. The Lions were slated to race at Overpeck Park last weekend, but the event was canceled.
