Mowatt-Larssen Named Director of Sport Science and Data Analytics

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Alex Mowatt-Larssen, who has been an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Yale since July of 2021, has earned a new role: Director of Sport Science and Data Analytics.

"We are very excited as a staff to bring Alex on as the Director of Sport Science and Data Analytics," said Anthony Belanger, Yale's Director of Sport Performance and Student Athlete Innovation. "He will be taking over the role held by Teofe Ziemnicki, who he has worked closely with over the past few months. Alex showed the same ability to quickly learn many of the same skills Teofe possessed that are very unique in the field, and allow us to better train our athletes."

The new role will enable Mowatt-Larssen to expand on some of the work he has already done to help Yale teams and student-athletes improve their performance.

"This fall, Alex was able to create a tool for the men's lacrosse team that allowed us to identify the minimum amount of weight needed to reach the desired output of the workout we had written," Belanger said. "Tools like this allow us to not only improve the training being done currently, but better evaluate ourselves as a staff and continue to improve our skills in our area. Along with this, Alex brings a great coaching presence and has a great relationships with his athletes. The athletes look forward to seeing him but also know he has their best interest in mind and wants to help develop them to the level they want to reach."

Mowatt-Larssen first joined the Yale staff as a strength and conditioning intern in August of 2020, serving in that role until November of 2020. He then began a strength and conditioning internship at the University of Florida  in January of 2021 before returning to Yale last July.

"I am honored to have an increased role in helping all of Yale's athletes maximize their performance and grow as people," said Mowatt-Larssen. "I will use my position to help our department continue to stay on the tip of the spear in making the most informed training decisions we can for our athletes. I want to thank Coach Belanger for the opportunity to continue to come to work at a unique place like Yale."

Prior to his internship at Yale, Mowatt-Larssen spent a year as a certified recovery specialist with Airrosti, a musculoskeletal therapy provider in Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from University College Cork in 2016.

Mowatt-Larssen is an NSCA certified strength and conditioning specialist. He is also certified by the American Red Cross for CPR/AED/First Aid.
