Yale Sweeps Harvard and Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. –  This Saturday marked the 100th year since the HYP was first raced back in 1922. In this year's HYP, the Yale lightweights swept Princeton and Harvard to win the Goldthwait Cup and defend the Vogel Cup. It was an afternoon of firsts: the first time the regatta was held since the COVID-19 pandemic, Yale's first Goldthwait Cup victory since 2016, and Yale's first sweep of the HYP since its expansion to five races.

The first varsity race for the Goldthwait Cup commenced at 11:40 a.m. under a beautiful blue sky and a slight crosshead wind from port. Off the start, Yale captured a half-length lead over Princeton with Harvard trailing not too far behind. By the halfway mark, Yale had broken the race wide-open, winning the Cup by open water with a time of 5:59.2 over Princeton, followed by Harvard.

The first race of the afternoon was the 3V race, which began Yale's pursuit of the team points trophy—the Vogel Cup. The Bulldogs blasted out of the stakeboats to take a length lead and expanded it over the 2000m distance. The Yale 3V won with a time of 6:29.0 over Harvard, followed by Princeton.

After the 3V race, the junior varsity race began. The race was tight out of the stakeboats, as Yale emerged only a few seats ahead of Princeton and Harvard. The Bulldogs eventually extended their lead to open water, winning with a time of 6:17.1 over Harvard, followed by Princeton.

With victories in the 1V, 2V and 3V events, Yale defended their 2019 Vogel Cup victory. However, later wins in the 4V and 5V4+ ultimately gave the Bulldogs a sweep—their first sweep of the HYP since its expansion to five races.

"This team wants to be faster than we have ever been before. Sweeping the HYP is just one step in the process. It feels great though, and I am very proud of what this team has accomplished so far," commented senior captain Geoff Skelly.
