No. 5 Bulldogs Run Past No. 13 Terriers in Boston, 22-15

Yale men’s lacrosse sets a program record with 11 goals in one quarter

BOSTON – The Yale University men's lacrosse team put forth an impressive offensive display in the first half of a nationally-ranked battle against Boston University on Tuesday evening on its way to a 22-15 win. The No. 5-ranked Bulldogs set a program record for goals in a quarter with 11 in the second as they cruised past the No. 13 Terriers.

The 22 goals scored are the most since Yale's 22-11 win at Harvard in April of 2019.

"We have a lot of respect for BU and what they have accomplished to this point. I think if we played that game 500 more times we don't do that again in a half. But my guys were not going to go in with a sub par effort," said head coach Andy Shay. "With that said, we still made some mistakes we would like to clean up but all-in-all, I'm pleased."

Yale actually trailed 10 minutes into the contest, but junior Thomas Bragg netted a hat trick in just the first stanza as his third score started a stretch of 11-straight goals which gave the Bulldogs a 14-5 lead. The Bulldogs entered halftime up 18-6 and were able to use its defense to close out the victory in the second half.

Bragg was not the only Bulldog cooking in the first half as he was joined by junior Matt Brandau and rookies Chris Lyons and Leo Johnson with first-half hat tricks.

Brandau had a banner day with 10 points and seven assists, both top marks in his already impressive career. Both Lyons and Johnson totaled eight and seven points, respectively, as each set new career-highs.

Lyons, who has now netted at least a hat trick in each of his four collegiate games, scored a career-best six goals and two assists. Johnson had career highs across the board with his point total on four goals and three assists.

Both Brandau and Lyons had four groundballs each as the Bulldogs decimated the Terriers in loose-ball pickups, 56-30. It is the highest team total since Yale had 58 in a 19-16 win over Georgetown in the 2019 NCAA Tournament First Round.

Six different players had at least four groundballs, led by faceoff man Nicholas Ramsey who picked up a game-high 16.

All four Yale goalies played in the contest as the quartet totaled 16 saves.

The Bulldogs continue a three-game road swing and return to Ivy League play this Saturday, April 9, at Dartmouth. Faceoff is set for Noon on ESPN+.
