WORCESTER, Mass. – After a 7-0 regular season, the Yale lightweight first varsity eight etched themselves into the history books this Sunday by winning the Eastern Sprints Championship to capture the Wright Cup and the Ivy League Championship, leading the team to a Jope Cup victory as well.
The incredible day of racing on Lake Quinsigamond culminated in the first varsity grand final at 4:39 p.m. After winning their preliminary heat, Yale was seeded first against Navy, Cornell, Georgetown, Columbia and Princeton. Off the start, all six crews remained tightly packed, with Yale just barely edging their bow ball out in front to lead the field. After battling all the way down the 2000m stretch, it was Yale who came in first with a time of 5:58.641, winning not only the Wright Cup and the Ivy League Championship but adding just enough points to the team total to defend their 2019 Jope Cup title. It was Yale's first Wright Cup victory and Ivy League Championship since 2016, as well as their fifth Jope Cup title in 10 years.
"I'm really proud of every guy and girl on this team. Anything can happen on Sprints day, and things fell in the right place for us today," commented senior captain Geoff Skelly. "We love to row and race together."
Prior to Yale's Cup victories, the Yale 3V finished second in their preliminary heat to advance to the grand final. The final commenced at 2:48 p.m., as Yale 3V competed against Cornell, Columbia, Navy, Harvard and Georgetown. The Bulldogs finished third to win a bronze medal with a time of 6:11.401.
