NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale women's crew will race on the international stage in one of the world's most prestigious events starting on Thursday. The Bulldogs have two entries at the 2022 Henley Royal Regatta – an eight in The Island Challenge Cup and a pair in The Hambleden Challenge Cup.
The Henley Royal Regatta, founded in 1839, is the best-known rowing regatta in the world, renowned for its match-racing. It is one of the highlights of the summer sporting and social calendar in the UK, as well as the rowing calendar internationally. Nearly 400 races are staged at the Regatta, featuring Olympians and emerging stars from around the world.
"We are honored and excited to be at Henley," said
Will Porter, the Friends of YWC Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "It is a great trip for our athletes and a chance to spend more time developing the team. This will be my sixth time taking YWC to Henley and it is always a special time for the athletes to experience the iconic Henley course and regatta experience. There is nothing else like it in our sport."
Racing began on Tuesday and runs through Sunday.
A record 419 crews qualified from 17 nations at every level of elite rowing, from school, university, club and country, will contest 393 head-to-head knockout races across 26 events in the first ever six-day Regatta. The historic Henley course covers 2,112 meters in Henley-on-Thames, England.
After being canceled in 2020 for the first time outside of the World Wars and hosting an event last August constrained by COVID-19, the Regatta is back in its traditional place in the summer season for the first time since 2019.
Yale last competed in the Henley Royal Regatta in 2018, advancing an eight to the semifinal of the Remenham Challenge Cup and qualifying a coxless four for the Town Challenge Cup. The Yale eight was involved in one of the most thrilling races of the Remenham Challenge Cup that year, coming from behind to defeat ASR Nereus, a Dutch Under-23 national crew that featured rowers who competed at the Rio Olympics.
