NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's soccer team opens the 2022 season with a pair of games at Reese Stadium. The Bulldogs host Hofstra on Friday at 4 p.m. and Quinnipiac on Sunday at 1 p.m. The games can be seen on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
Â
Yale plays its first four games in the friendly confines of Reese. The Bulldogs' first road trip isn't until the weekend of Sept. 9 when they play at Kansas State (Sept. 9) and Kansas (Sept. 11).
Â
The 2022 edition of the Bulldogs will be young. There are only four seniors on the 29-person roster.
Sarah Martinez, the Loring Family Head Coach of women's soccer, welcomes a talented group of newcomers, including defender
Marz Akins, who transferred from TCU and was the 2020 Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
Â
"Our staff is so excited for our group to hit the field this weekend," Martinez said. "We have two quality opponents coming to play us that will give us plenty of answers early this season. While we return many student-athletes who played significant minutes last fall, we still are quite young as a group. Overall, the buy in, commitment and development we have experienced over the last nine months is something we are excited to showcase."
Â
The Bulldogs tuned up for the regular season opener with an impressive 3-0 victory over Manhattan in an exhibition game last Saturday.
Tina Teik,
Tanner Cahalan and
Abigail Solomon scored. Yale outshot the Jaspers 25-4 and had a big edge in possession time.
Â
On Sunday, Yale Athletics is excited to host Mary Wade Senior Day. Through community outreach and service, a
relationship formed between the women's soccer team and the Mary Wade Senior Living Community. This transformational partnership focused on the efforts to connect the generations while providing a space for both organizations to learn from one another.
Â
"Mary Wade is pleased to be working with the Yale women soccer team on this Mary Wade Senior Day game," said David V. Hunter, President & CEO of the Mary Wade Senior Living Community. "This is an outstanding group of student athletes who are dedicated to the respect of seniors. We are privileged to have had these athletes become a part of the culture and mission of the Mary Wade family."
Â
Added Martinez, "Our partnership with Mary Wade is something we take great pride in as a program. The ability to mesh generations within our community is something that has had a tremendous impact on our student-athletes. When first speaking with the leadership team at Mary Wade, I made it very clear we wanted a long-term relationship that can benefit both sides when it comes to support, relationships and perspective. We are so excited to welcome the residents of Mary Wade to our game this weekend and I know for certain it is a game our student-athletes have been looking forward to since it was scheduled."
