BOSTON -- The Yale women's cross country team had another successful trip to Boston this morning for the Coast-to Coast Battle in Beantown 5k at Franklin Park. Racing against teams from all over the country, Yale placed 11th with an impressive spread of only 34 seconds between the top five runners. The Bulldogs showed great improvement compared to the HYP meet a few weeks ago, indicating that they are only getting stronger as they approach championship season.
Yale's top five finishers all broke 19 minutes in the 5k Friday morning, and the team average was an impressive 18:35. Improving nearly 40 seconds from her last race on this course, senior captain Samantha Friborg was Yale's top finisher with a 38th place finish overall in 18:19. This time is 37 seconds faster than her previous cross country 5k personal record. Coming in 46th place as Yale's second finisher, first year Claire Archer had an amazing second collegiate race with an 18:28 performance. Right behind her, first year Miranda Lorsbach earned 50th place with a time of 18:30. Sophomore Kylie Goldfarb was Yale's fourth finisher in 18:44 while first year Carmel Fitzgibbon was fifth for Yale in 18:53. First year Linde Fonville and junior Sophia Karperos round out the top 7.
After weeks of hard work and great training, the improvement by the Bulldogs Friday morning shows how progression can be dramatic during the cross country season with proper training and adequate resting. The Bulldogs will be back in action in Pennsylvania next Friday at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University's Murray Goodman Cross Country Course. They will look to carry this week's great momentum forward to another meet with nationally ranked competition.
