Women's Hockey to Host "Mandi Schwartz Whiteout" Game on January 28

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -  The Yale women's hockey team will host the "Mandi Schwartz Whiteout" game on Saturday, Jan. 28 against Clarkson. Mandi Schwartz '10, a former Yale women's ice hockey player, passed away after a battle with acute myeloid leukemia on April 3, 2011, at the age of 23.

In honor of Mandi, Yale Athletics will be selling commemorative t-shirts at the game, with proceeds benefiting the Mandi Schwartz Foundation. Rally towels will also be given out in support of Mandi and the whiteout.

After being diagnosed with cancer in her junior year, Mandi's search for a genetic match for a stem cell transplant to save her life inspired thousands to sign up as potential marrow or blood stem cell donors. No perfect match was ever found for her.

Since then, Yale has launched the Mandi Schwartz Marrow Donor Registration Drive, which is part of the nationwide "Get in the Game. Save a Life" campaign for Be The Match®. The athletic department has held drives in each of the past 14 springs, ever since Mandi was first diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in December of 2008.

The Yale football and women's ice hockey programs led the charge in the first two years of the drive. In 2011, the field hockey team began assisting. In 2018, the men's soccer team joined these efforts, and in 2022, the Yale volleyball team joined the efforts as well. Members of these teams help spread the word about the need for donors to their classmates, friends, and relatives.

This year's drive will be held on the Yale campus on Thursday, April 20, 2023.
