Appleman Announces Class of 2027

Four newcomers joining roster in fall

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The 2022 season was one of the most successful in Yale volleyball history. The Bulldogs, under the direction of head coach Erin Appleman, captured their 12th Ivy League title and fourth in the past five seasons, as well as winning the first Ivy League Tournament, which punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs are looking to continue that tradition of success with the addition of four tremendous student-athletes for the Class of 2027: Laurece Abraham, Payton Bryan, Betsy Goodenow, and Arya Jue.

Here is a closer look at the newcomers:

Laurece Abraham signingAbraham is a 6-1 middle from Canton, Mich., who first made national waves when she was named to Prepvolleyball's Frosh 59 list of the best freshman in the U.S. As a starter for Detroit Country Day, Abraham was named D2 All State, and a year later was an honorable mention All-America selection, as well as a Miss Volleyball Finalist for the state of Michigan. In her senior year, she was named First Team All-State.

Competing for Legacy Volleyball, Abraham started for the 16s team that captured the 16 Open AAU National Championship and was fifth in the USA Volleyball Junior National Championships. As a junior, she was once again a starter when her Legacy team captured the 17 Open AAU National Championship, and she was All-Tournament Honorable Mention. Abraham was named an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American and AVCA All-Region. Her stellar play also earned her an invite to the Under Armour Invitational.

Payton Bryan signingBryan is a 6-3 pin hitter from Jupiter, Fla., who was an AAU Academic All-American in 2021 and 2022. She was also Palm Beach All County First Team in 2021, Sun Sentinel All County First Team, and Sun Sentinel Player of the Year Nominee. That season her Benjamin School volleyball squad made it to the Florida High School Final Four, and she was named MVP of her high school team.

As a member of Tribe Volleyball, Bryan was a starter for the 15 Open AAU National Champions in 2020 and was named MVP of the division as well as to the All-Tournament Team. Later that summer she went on to compete with the Girls Youth Junior National A3 Team. She followed that up by making the AVCA Phenom List in 2021, as well as a Prepvolleyball 2023 Top 150. She repeated that honor in 2022, also making the AVCA's All American Watch List and Best and Brightest List.

Betsy Goodenow signingGoodenow is a 6-foot lefty from Lenexa, Kan., who has enjoyed tremendous success in high school and club volleyball. Her senior year she led her St Thomas Aquinas team to the Kansas 5A State Championship and was named the 5A Player of the Year, as well as to the All-Tournament Team. She was also named to the Kansas Volleyball Association 5A All-State First Team, was Eastern Kansas League Conference Player of the Year, and a participant in the Missouri KC Metro All Star Game. Goodenow was also a starter on St Thomas 2020 and 2019 Kansas 5A State Championship teams. Not content to be a state champion in just one sport, she was a state track & field finalist in four events, helping her high school capture the state title. Prepvolleyball named Betsy to their High School All American Third Team and tabbed her one of the Top 100 players in the country.

A member of MAVs KC volleyball club, Goodenow helped her team to the 16 Open bronze medal in 2021 while being named to the All-Tournament Team.

Arya Jue signingJue is a 5-8 libero from Marietta, Ga., who comes from one of the best clubs in the country where she has received great training against top national competition.

After being named to the AVCA Phenom List in 2020 – a feat duplicated in 2021 and 2022-- Jue was the starting libero for A5's 16-1 team that finished 5th in the 16 Open Division at USAV Junior Nationals. During that season she was named a Prepvolleyball Sunshine Qualifier Supernova, and one of PrepDig's top liberos. As the starting libero, she helped her team qualify twice for Junior Nationals, once with a third-place finish at the Northern Lights Qualifier, and also with a second-place at the Sunshine Qualifier. Jue's team started the season off with the 16 Open Championship at Triple Crown, where she was named MVP of the division. She was also the starting libero for A5's international tour in Croatia.

The starting libero again in 2022 for A5's top 17s team, Jue's team captured the 17 Open title at Triple Crown. She then helped the team to a pair of runner-up finishes at the Sunshine and Big South Qualifiers, the latter at which she was named All-Tournament. Jue later made the All-Tournament Team at the AAU National Championships where her team finished fifth in 17 Open. She was further honored as a Vball Recruiter 4-star Libero, Under Armour Camp invitee, and one of PrepDig's Top National Liberos.
