Lagos Scores Two Goals To Propel Yale Past Columbia

NEW HAVEN, Conn.Eric Lagos netted two goals including the game-winner in the 82nd minute to propel the Yale men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Columbia on Sunday afternoon at Reese Stadium.

The Bulldogs earn a crucial three points in the conference standings and improve to 7-5-2 this season. Yale sits atop the Ivy League table with eight points, tied with Harvard, Cornell and Penn. Columbia falls to 2-7-3 this season.

"There are no easy games and we certainly made this one interesting but credit to Columbia for making it challenging and I thought we were unfortunate not to have a goal or two at halftime, even against the wind, but we were just a bit off on our execution and timing," said Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "I am very proud of how the guys responded after Columbia got their equalizer.  Ultimately, it took a couple special plays by Eric Lagos and Max Rogers to find the goals today and hopefully they have some more in them in the coming games. We will enjoy a much needed week of recharge coming up."

How It Happened
  • 20' | Eric Lagos gets behind the Columbia defense but his shot attempt is just wide of the net.
  • HT | Despite several promising opportunities, the Bulldogs could not get on the scoreboard during the first half.
  • 56' | Columbia has an offensive chance when a striker nearly gets behind the Yale defense, but Jamie Orson showed fantastic closing speed to snuff out the opportunity.
  • 58' | Joseph Farouz nearly puts a header in off a cross, but Collodi makes an outstanding save, knocking the ball over the crossbar.
  • 64' | GOAL! Rogers takes the ball up the far side of the field and directs a beautiful cross into the box for Lagos, who soars above the Columbia defender and heads it past Collodi for the first score of the game.
