Saint Joseph’s Tops Yale in Home Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Saint Joseph's broke open a one-point game with a 15-5 run in the third quarter Saturday afternoon at Lee Amphitheater, going on to beat the Yale women's basketball team 66-45. Senior guard Jenna Clark led the Bulldogs with nine points and five assists.

Yale (0-2, 0-0 Ivy League) was coming off a hard-fought 79-74 loss at Pitt Tuesday, having come within two of the Panthers with 74 seconds to play after trailing by 10 just over a minute earlier. On Saturday the Bulldogs started strong, leading by three after a layup by senior forward Brenna McDonald at 7:31 of the second. But Saint Joseph's (2-0, 0-0 Atlantic 10) went on a 10-0 run and never trailed again.

Yale got within one on a McDonald jumper with 9:37 left in the third, capping a 6-0 run that started with a jumper from junior guard Christen McCann with 2:41 left in the second. But the 15-5 Saint Joseph's run that followed gave the Hawks breathing room, and they built off that. They outscored Yale 24-14 in the fourth to pull away for the win.

Quotes from Coach Eshe
  • On the team's shooting: "We took 72 shots to their 50. You can't win a basketball game shooting 28%. We had 24 offensive rebounds; normally there's no way you lose a game like that. But we just couldn't put the ball in."
  • On the performance of post players Brenna McDonald and Grace Thybulle, who combined for 16 points: "Our two big post players have been exceptional for us. They are the most steady part of our team right now. We've got to get them more touches."
  • On what gave Saint Joseph's the edge: "Saint Joseph's is always a good team. They're tough. I don't think we matched their urgency. They just play hard."

Notes
  • Led by eight points from junior forward Grace Thybulle, Yale had a 15-2 advantage in bench points.
  • Senior forward Brenna McDonald and junior guard Nyla McGill tied for the team lead with 11 rebounds. That was a career high for McDonald. Sophomore guard Kiley Capstraw, who played part of the game with a face mask after an injury in the Pitt game, added six rebounds.
