MONCTON, New Brunswick – Yale was its typical self on offense Friday night. The Bulldogs got a balanced attack, shared the ball and shot nearly 50 percent from the field. What was most impressive, though, came at the other end of the floor. Yale held a Colgate team that scored 75 points against Syracuse on Tuesday to just 20 first-half points and 36 percent shooting for the game in an impressive 68-50 victory on the opening night of the Atlantic Slam in Canada. The Raiders are the three-time defending Patriot League champions.
The Bulldogs (3-1) have won two straight games. Colgate (2-1) lost for the first time.
KEY STAT
The Bulldogs' defense was particularly stifling in the first half when they held the Raiders to just 9-of-32 (28.1 percent) shooting from the field.
TURNING POINT
The first 10 minutes was tight, but Yale used a 16-4 run, capped by a
Danny Wolf three-point play, to take a 31-17 advantage. The lead grew to 16, 36-20, at halftime. The Raiders never got closer than 11 in the second half.
SCORING LEADERS
Wolf tallied a career-high 15 points to lead three Bulldogs in double figures. He was 6-of-10 from the field and added eight rebounds and three assists.
August Mahoney hit all four of his three-point shots and finished with 14 points, while
John Poulakidas added 10.
Yassine Gharram led the bench scoring with eight points and
Samson Aletan had four points and five rebounds in nine minutes.
QUOTING JONES
"It was a great defensive effort," said
James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "We really set the tone in the first half. I thought we took a step in the right direction tonight."
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bulldogs will test themselves against another strong mid-major program on Saturday when they face Weber State at 6 p.m. EST on the second day of the Atlantic Slam. Weber State, who beat Saint Mary's earlier in the week, lost to Gardner Webb in the first game of the day on Friday.
