Bulldogs Split Final Two Games on West Coast

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Yale softball team split a pair of games with Western Carolina and the University of San Diego to close out their West Coast trip. The Bulldogs fell to Western Carolina, 2-1, before bouncing back and taking down the host San Diego, 4-1, to cap the weekend at the USD Softball Complex.
 
Game One: Western Carolina 2, Yale 1
  • The first game of the day was a tight scoring affair.
  • Both teams only mustered a combined two hits through the first two innings of play.
  • Western Carolina found the scoresheet first in the third inning, scoring two runs on a two-out double to right field.
  • Yale responded in the fourth inning as Lauren Perren hit a single up the middle with two outs. Willa Ferrer used that baserunner to hit a double to left center and score Perren.
  • The Catamounts held on, allowing the Bulldogs just one hit through the next three innings, to secure the win.
 
Game Two: Yale 4, San Diego 1
  • It was the Bulldogs who struck first in the second inning again the host team.
  • Libby Peoples worked the count to get Yale's first baserunner of the game. SJ Mull stepped to the plate and knocked a double to left center, bringing Peoples around from first.
  • San Diego tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a single through the right side.
  • Two scoreless innings passed until Yale blew the game open.
  • Sam Goodcase hit an infield single to get things started. Gretchen Bunovsky then replaced her on the basepath and stole second. Alex Perren singled up the middle to give Yale runners on the corners. Carolyn Skotz loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Lauren Perren took her turn at the plate and blasted a two-out triple down the left field line that cleared the bases and put the Bulldogs up by three.
  • Nicole Conway allowed San Diego just two hits for the remainder of the game to seal the victory for Yale.
 
Notes
  • Nicole Conway pitched a complete game and picked up her second win of the season.
  • Lauren Perren went 3-for-6 at the plate and had three RBI and one run.
  • Willa Ferrer went 2-for-3 in game two with two doubles, and one RBI. 
 
Up Next
Yale returns to the east and will begin conference play on March 18 at Princeton.
