RALEIGH, N.C. -- As temperatures continued to soar in North Carolina, the Yale men's track and field team continued to impress on the third and final day of the Raleigh Relays.
Amid impressive performances in the hammer throw and the sprint relay events, the Bulldogs excelled in particular over the 800m distance. With the scorching hot weather providing great conditions for fast middle distance running, Yale's seven 800m runners took full advantage as six of them ran outdoor PRs. After sophomore
Calvin Katz put in a ferocious finishing kick to win the first heat of the day in 1:52.05, with junior
Liam Garrett close behind in fourth in 1:53.58, the remaining Bulldogs capitalized on the early momentum as the PRs kept coming. Sophomore duo
Austin Montini and
Elon Abergel went 2-3 in the second heat in times of 1:51.37 and 1:51.76, before fellow sophomore
Winslow Atkeson placed second in the third heat in 1:52.22. With juniors
Drake Prince and
Thomas Cirrito also delivering a 2-3 punch in the 13th heat with times of 1:50.24 and 1:51.08, the Bulldogs displayed a strong early season show of strength in depth over the half-mile event. If this level of performance continues, Yale should be feeling confident about their prospects in the 4x800m relay at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships later on in the season.Â
Also confident about their chances at Heps should be the Bulldogs' throwing contingent, who showed out once again in the hammer throw. After some colossal throws in the shot put and the discus throw over the past two days, it was junior
Matthew Appel who delivered yet again for Yale with a PR of 54.89m. Just two centimeters behind him was first year
Jake Sun, who, in his first collegiate hammer throw competition, showed that the future is bright for Yale throws as he soared out to 22nd position overall. Also PRing were first year
Nolan Recker and junior
Christopher Ward, who threw marks of 49.98m and 40.39 respectively. Like Appel, Recker and Ward competed in three throwing events at Raleigh, and the trio leaves North Carolina with confidence high heading into the remainder of the outdoor season.Â
Finally, after honing their talents in the individual events yesterday, the sprinters came together for some lightning-quick relay events to round out the weekend. A team of
Kit Colson,
Jacob Kao,
James Grindle and
Andrew Farr combined for a 41.10 clocking in the 4x100m before Farr, Grindle and Kao returned for the 4x400m relay alongside
Simon Jupp to set an impressive 3:15.02 time. In a display of remarkable consistency, both teams finished 10th place overall in the meet.Â
The Bulldogs now carry strong momentum heading into the rest of the outdoor season. They'll look to build upon that next week as they travel to Storrs, Conn., to compete in the UConn Dog Fight.Â
