Bulldogs Split Doubleheader with Cornell on Sunday

Reid Easterly earns third win of the season

WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Reid Easterly pitched a gem and the Yale bats exploded to help lead the Bulldogs to a split of a doubleheader with Cornell on Sunday afternoon at Bush '48 Field.

Yale won the first game 12-2, and dropped the nightcap 7-5.  The Bulldogs finish the weekend with a 5-12 mark overall and 1-2 record in Ivy League play.

In game one, the Bulldogs exploded for eight runs in the first and never looked back.  Colton Shaw and Jake Williams both had two-run singles in the inning.

It was more than enough run support for Yale starter Easterly, who pitched seven innings and allowed one unearned run.  He won his third game of the season with a final line of four strikeouts, four hits and one walk.

The Bulldogs finished with 11 hits, including two each from Jimmy Chatfield, Ben Metzner and Carson Swank.  Chatfield, AJ Gaich, Metzner and Shaw all had two runs scored apiece.

Beck Milner added a RBI single in the second, and Gaich also had a run-scoring hit in the fourth. Quinn Clearly came on in the eighth to record the next four outs and Mick Kelley retired the last two hitters.

In game two, Alec Atkinson homered for the Bulldogs.  Cornell scored five runs in the first two innings and took a 5-1 lead into the third.

Davis Hanson had a sac fly in the first and Williams had a RBI single in the third to account for two Yale runs, while Shaw had a two-run double in the eighth to cut the deficit to 6-5.  The Bulldogs brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Milner drew a lead-off walk but could not score.

Gaich and Williams both had two hits for the Bulldogs in the game.

Josh Richardson came on to relieve starter Bryant Reese and tossed two scoreless innings.  Mark Capell replaced Richardson in the fourth, pitched 5.2 innings and allowed two runs to keep the game close.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday afternoon with a home game against Sacred Heart.
