Bulldogs Compete at Dog Fight

STORRS, Conn. -- The Yale women's track and field team had a successful day at the UConn Dog Fight Saturday, concluding with a sixth-place team finish. The Bulldogs finished with 39 points, and Cornell won the meet with 191.66 points. While the conditions were initially rainy, the weather turned sunny and warm by the end of the meet. The Bulldogs have proven that they are ready for next week's meet with Harvard against Oxford and Cambridge.

In the sprinting events, junior Mira Thakur raced her first collegiate 100m race and led the Bulldogs with a time of 12.84 seconds. First year Casia Provencal was just behind in 12.93 seconds. First year Caroline Glessing was the first Bulldog across the line in the 200m with a time of 25.81 seconds. Sophomore Bridget Vitu and junior Ella Mainwaring Foster were at her heels, running 26.02 seconds and 26.05 seconds respectively. Mainwaring Foster doubled back to run 58.54 seconds in the 400m, improving upon her time from Raleigh Relays. In just her second attempt at the event, sophomore Peyton Parker ran 1:05.07 in the 400m hurdles, which is a new personal record.

The women's 800m and 1500m races were dominated by first year Carmel Fitzgibbon as she opened her season with marks of 2:12.44 and 4:37.77. The 4x100m relay of Provencal, senior captain Aliya Boshnak, sophomore Dominique Romain and Thakur ran 47.64 to place fifth overall. Taking the silver, first year Molly Harding, sophomore Arielle Moore, Parker and junior Sydney McCord ran 3:48.10 in the 4x400m to finish right behind UConn. The energy on the track was electric, and the rain certainly did not slow the Bulldogs down.

In the field, junior Bella Bergloff threw a massive personal record of 43.14m in the discus to beat her old mark by 3.58m. She later doubled back to throw 11.73m in the shot put. In the hammer throw, junior Maria Leskovec threw a personal best of 51.17m and impressively competed in four events today. Junior Bharathi Subbiah jumped 5.41m in the long jump and junior Sophie Wright jumped a massive personal best of 11.60m in the triple jump. Overall, it was a great day for the Bulldogs to improve.

The Bulldogs will be back in action next weekend with Harvard against Oxford and Cambridge in a historic showdown at Harvard's track. They will rest up this week in preparation for the big competition.
