NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The 2023-24 Yale men's swimming and diving team has its leader.
Sungmin Kang has been elected captain following a team vote.
"Being elected captain is a tremendous honor and privilege to uphold," said Kang, who came to Yale from Louisville, Ky. "I am blessed to be supported by such talent and dedication from the coaches, alumni and from the team."
Kang competed in butterfly, breaststroke and the individual medley for the Bulldogs this season. At the HYP meet, he finished ninth in the 200 butterfly and 400 IM. In 2021-22, he finished 11th in the 200 fly at the Ivy League Championship.
Yale is coming off a successful season. The Bulldogs finished third at the Ivy Championship, an improvement of three places from 2022. Strong leadership played an important role in both the team and Kang's development.
"I owe a great debt of gratitude to the remarkable captains and leaders who came before me, and whose guidance and inspiration have played an instrumental role in my own development and the development of the culture of the team," Kang said. "As I enter this new role, I am grateful to have the opportunity to carry forward their legacy of excellence. I am looking forward to fostering an environment of growth and success for our upcoming classes. I am determined to lead with the same level of passion and dedication, which once inspired me, to inspire in our younger teammates."
This summer, Kang will be interning at Bank of America in San Francisco. He also will continue to train and compete in meets across the country.
