Men's Hockey Adds Seven Newcomers to 2023-24 Squad

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Keith Allain, Malcolm G. Chase Head Coach, and the Yale men's hockey team has announced that seven newcomers will be joining the squad for the 2023-24 season.
 
There are three U.S.-born players, three Canadian-born, and one Finnish-born player in the fold. Experience spans multiple leagues across Canada and the United States, and one Finnish-based league. Here's how it shakes out:
  • Three of the seven players have experience in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL)
  • One player from the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL)
  • One player from the United States Hockey League (USHL)
  • One player from the North American Hockey League (NAHL)
  • One player from the Finnish Liiga.

David Andreychuk, Forward
Northeast Generals (NAHL) | Chatham, N.J.
  •  High School: Attended both Frederick Gunn School (Conn.) and Chatham High School (N.J.)…achieved honor roll all four years…helped the team to 2020 NEPSAC Small School Championship (Gunn).
  • Northeast Generals (NAHL): Appeared in 153 games for the Generals…recorded 48 goals, 113 assists for a total of 161 points…named a First Team All-NAHL All-Star and First Team East Division All-Star…earned the team's 2021-22 Leadership Award…named the 2022-23 Most Valuable Player (MVP).
  • Personal: Interested in golf and tennis…plans to major in economics.
  • Why Yale? "I chose Yale because it is an incredible school with remarkable history and traditions that will provide me with an excellent education. The opportunity to play hockey for Yale is an honor and the discussions I had with Coach Allain and his staff convinced me that it was going to be an awesome place to play NCAA hockey."
 
Rhys Bentham, Defense
Cranbrook Bucks (BCHL) | Calgary, Alberta, Canada
  • High School: Attended Central Memorial High School…earned honors all four years.
  • Cranbrook Bucks (BCHL): Captain Cranbrook from 2021-2023…served as assistant captain in 2020-21…appeared in 48 games…collected 13 goals and 25 assists (38 points) …Second Team All-BCHL…voted the team's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2022-23…named the Community Player of the Year in 2021-22.
  • Personal: Enjoys surfing and playing tennis...plans to major in economics.
  • Why Yale? "I chose Yale because of the amazing reputation of their athletics and academics. The history of the hockey program as well as their academics makes it unique and exciting. Yale allows me to pursue my hockey career while also gaining a top-notch education. Everybody speaks very highly of Yale and how much they love it so it was a no-brainer for me." 
 
Owen Forester, Defense
Milton Menace (OJHL) | Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
  • High School: Attended St. Marcellinus Secondary School…earned honors.
  • Milton Menace (OJHL): Played for the Menace from 2019-2023…amassed 72 points (17 goals, 55 assists) in 101 games played…2022-23 League All-Star…helped his team to the 202122 West Division Championship.
  • International: Competed as a member of Team Canada East in the 2022 World Junior A Challenge…served as an alternate captain…helped the team win silver.
  • Why Yale? "Yale's world-class education, combined with its elite hockey program is the ideal place to excel in the classroom and on the ice."
 
Iisai Pesonen, Forward
KalPa Kuopio | Kuopio, Finland
  • High School: Attended Kuopion klassillinen lukio…
  • KalPa Kuopio: Been a member of Kuopio since the 2018-19 season…competed on the U16, U18 and U20 squads…team competes in the Finnish Liiga…registered 162 points in 213 appearances…U20 SM-Sarja silver medalist.
  • International: Has competed as a member of Team Finland…appeared at U16 National Team tournaments.
  • Personal: Enjoys golf and padel…plans to major in economics.
  • Why Yale? "It was the best and most intriguing option for me. It will give me a chance to play great hockey and get a degree at the same time."
 
Will Richter, Forward
Penticton Vees (BCHL) | Greenwich, Conn.
  • High School: Attended Penticton High School (Canada).
  • Penticton Vees (BCHL): Appeared in 123 games for the Vees…registered 20 goals and 33 assists (53 points)…two-time BCHL Champion.
  • Personal: Works hockey goalie camps in the summer…enjoys wake surfing, wakeboarding, and playing golf.
  • Why Yale? "I have lived in Connecticut my whole life and grew up going to Yale hockey games. Earning a spot on the Bulldogs was a dream come true."
 
Jack Stark, Goalie
Chicago Steel (USHL) | Chaska, Minnesota
  • High School: Attended Chaska High School.
  • Chicago Steel (USHL): Appeared in 40 games for the Steel…had a 29-9-2 record…named to the 2021 First Team All-USHL Rookie Team…helped his team to the 2021 USHL Anderson Cup Championship and the USHL Clark Cup Championship.
  • International: 2022 USA Hockey National Goaltending camp invitee.
  • Personal: Enjoys the outdoors and reading…coaches hockey in the summer…plans to major in economics.
  • Why Yale? "I chose Yale because of its rich history and dedication to both academics and athletics."
 
Seiya Tanaka-Campbell, Forward
Vernon Vipers (BCHL) | Milton Bay, British Columbia, Canada
  • High School: Attended Shawnigan Lake School…academic prefect.
  • Vernon Vipers (BCHL): Appeared in 64 games for the Vipers…amassed 84 points (38 goals, 46 assists).
  • International: Competed for Team Canada…appeared at the Canada Winter Games.
  • Personal: Also interested in golf and chess…brother Jojo is a sophomore on the team.
  • Why Yale? "It's an opportunity for me to play Division I hockey, while also receiving a great education at a prestigious school."
 
The Bulldogs' 29-game regular season kicks off on the road at Brown on Oct. 27 in Providence.
