NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's soccer team sealed a come-from-behind victory in its home opener at Reese Stadium. The Bulldogs picked up a 2-1 win over UMass and improved to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Minutewomen fell to 1-1-2.
Â
"Winning is hard and anytime we can get a result against a quality opponent like UMass, we are very happy about it," said
Sarah Martinez, Loring Family Head Coach. "We scored two great goals and Marisa [Shorrock] had some big saves late in the game. I'm happy with both Logan [Jacobs] and Anita [Thorvaldsdottir] who each scored their first collegiate goals."
Â
How It Happened
- 29' | UMass found the back of the net for the game's first goal.
- 54' | After heading into halftime down a goal, the Bulldogs put their feet on the gas. After pressing on offense, a ball ricocheted off a UMass defender and found the foot of Logan Jacobs. Jacobs wound up and catapulted a shot that sailed into the right side of goal to tie the game.
- 58' | Just under four and a half minutes later, Annika Bryant slotted a pass to Anita Thorvaldsdottir in Yale's offensive zone. Thorvaldsdottir charged toward goal and tapped a shot to the lower right side through the five-hole of a UMass defender for the go-ahead.
- FT |Â Marisa Shorrock made five of her seven saves in the final five minutes of the game.Â
"I loved the way our women responded from Friday. It's a quick turnaround and every player was ready to play today. I thought our ability to press in the second half was the difference-maker in this game. We are onto the recovery before taking a long trip, but I am excited to watch this team keep growing," Martinez said in closing.

Notes
- This was the first game since Sept. 15, 2019, where the Bulldogs came from behind to win. That game saw Yale go down 1-0 against Robert Morris and then rattle off two unanswered goals for the victory on the road.
- Both Logan Jacobs and Anita Thorvaldsdottir scored their first collegiate goals.
- The last time two players scored their first collegiate goals was in last year's 4-1 victory over Quinnipiac where Belle Golden and Zia Makhathini found the back of the net.
