Freedman’s Goal Lifts Yale Past Hofstra in OT, 2-1

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Yale field hockey team came through with its third overtime win of the season Tuesday afternoon, topping Hofstra 2-1 at Cindy Lewis Stadium. Julia Freedman scored the game-winner at 66:11.

Yale improves to 8-4 overall (2-2 in the Ivy League), while Hofstra falls to 2-11 overall (0-3 in the CAA).

Summary
  • Yale was denied a great chance to take the lead at 15:33 of the second quarter, when a defensive save by Hofstra's Jamie Mc Millan stopped an Ellie Barlow shot on a penalty corner.
  • The Bulldogs had a 12-0 advantage in shots heading into the fourth quarter, but the game was still scoreless.
  • Yale went ahead on a penalty corner at 48:08 of the fourth. Hettie Whittington slid a pass over to Issy Baileff, who fired in her first career goal.
  • Hofstra made its first and only penalty corner of regulation count, as Tara McNally's goal on a deflection at 52:24 tied the score.
  • A wide shot on a Hofstra penalty corner at 64:14 of overtime kept the game tied 1-1.
  • Yale's game-winner came after Chiara Picciafuoco sent the ball on goal from just outside the circle. Hofstra goalie Tessa Lambright made the stop, but Julia Freedman was at the doorstep and jammed the rebound home for the victory.

Notes
  • Yale finished with a 19-3 shot advantage and an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • That was Freedman's second career goal, and her first game-winner.
  • The 19-3 shot advantage marked the third time this season Yale has outshot an opponent by 12 or more. The Bulldogs outshot Lehigh 21-9 Sept. 6 and outshot Sacred Heart 29-3 on Sept. 20.
  • Yale has now won six of the last seven in the series with Hofstra.
  • Yale is now 4-3 in road games. If the Bulldogs reach the six-win mark in road games, that would be the first time they have accomplished that since 1998.
  • With Baileff and Freedman adding their names to the scoresheet, the Bulldogs have had 11 different goal scorers this season.
