NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A career night by senior guard/forward
Mackenzie Egger was not enough for the Yale women's basketball team Tuesday against Merrimack at Lee Amphitheater. Egger's 18 point, 20 rebound performance – her first career double-double – was for naught as the Warriors took a 50-45 win.
Yale (1-4, 0-0 Ivy League) led 45-44 after a layup by Egger with 1:32 to play, but Merrimack (3-2, 0-0 MAAC) scored the final six points of the game to earn the win.
The Bulldogs were hurt by a slow start – Merrimack scored the first six points of the game – but eventually rallied to take a 24-23 lead on a three-pointer by senior guard
Avery Lee in the final minute of the second quarter. They built their lead to eight on a Lee three-pointer with 2:26 left in the third, but Merrimack cut the deficit to three heading into the fourth.
Neither team led by more than five in the fourth. After Yale took a one-point lead with 1:32 left, Merrimack went ahead on a layup and the next Bulldog possession ended with a charge call. The Warriors hit a pair of free throws, and a missed three-point attempt by the Bulldogs followed by another pair of Warrior free throws sealed the game.
