BALTIMORE, Md. – The Yale baseball team earned a split against the University of Maryland Baltimore County on Saturday at Alumni Field in a doubleheader. The Bulldogs triumphed in game one with a season-high run total in a 10-5 victory. UMBC prevailed in the second contest, downing the Elis 7-0.
The Bulldogs picked up their second win of the season and their record stands at 2-10. With the split, the Retrievers moved to 3-11.
Game 1 – Yale 10, UMBC 5
How it Happened
- Bottom 1st | UMBC got on the board first with an RBI double.
- Top 3rd | The Bulldogs tied the game on an RBI double by Garrett Larsen which scored Max Imhoff.
- Top 6th | Yale broke the game open in the sixth. Following an RBI single by Chace Chaplin, Chris DiPrima knocked in two more. The Bulldogs led 5-1 after six innings.
- Top 7th | The Elis tacked on four more. DiPrima tallied his third and fourth RBIs of the game on a single to left.
- Bottom 8th | UMBC scored four to cut the Bulldog lead to 9-5.
- Top 9th | Colin Sloan singled home Jeff Pierantoni to seal the 10-5 victory for Yale.
Game Notes
- The Bulldogs broke out offensively, scoring a season-high 10 runs after scoring 10 over their previous seven games.
- DiPrima knocked in a career-high four runs. The first year is hitting .417 in six games to begin his collegiate career.
- Davis Hanson extended his hit streak to five games and has hit safely in nine of 11 games this season.
- Jake Williams tallied three hits and now has three multi-hit games so far this year.
- Daniel Cohen started the game for the Bulldogs, allowing one earned run over 4.1 innings. Tate Evans picked up the win in relief.
Game 2 – UMBC 7, Yale 0
How it Happened
- Bottom 1st | UMBC scored twice to open the second game of the doubleheader.
- Bottom 5th | The Retrievers added a run to go up 3-0.
- Bottom 6th | UMBC went up 4-0 on a sac fly.
- Bottom 7th | The hosts tacked on two more to increase their lead to 6-0.
- Bottom 8th | UMBC added a run on a balk to seal the 7-0 victory.
Game Notes
- With the win, UMBC snapped a four-game losing streak to the Bulldogs.
- Reid Easterly started for the Bulldogs giving up four runs over five innings. The lefty struck out a career-high 10 batters.
- Jake Williams single in the eighth inning and has now hit safely in five of the past six games.
