NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 18 Yale women's lacrosse team turned a back-and-forth battle with UConn into a runaway victory by outscoring the Huskies 12-1 over the game's final 34:53 Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. That included a span of 24:24 in which the Bulldogs held UConn scoreless. Yale outscored UConn 10-1 in the second half.
Yale (5-0, 1-0 Ivy League) had lost two in a row in the series against UConn (1-4, 0-0 Big East). The teams traded two-goal runs for the first 21 minutes of the game and were tied 4-4. After Yale went ahead 5-4 on a goal by first-year midfielder
Ashley Kiernan – the first of her career – UConn tied the game 5-5 at 4:53 of the second. The Huskies would score only one more goal.
UConn goalie Landyn White, an honorable mention Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse All-American last year, made 10 saves in the first to keep the game close. She finished with 15 saves.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Junior attacker Jenna Collignon led all scorers with five goals, her second straight five-goal game. She and junior midfielder Fallon Vaughn (4-1-5) each had five points.
- Junior midfielder Sky Carrasquillo (2-2-4) and first-year midfielder Ashley Kiernan (2-2-4) had four points each. Those were the first two goals of Kiernan's career.
- Collignon and junior midfielder Taylor Lane had a game-best seven draw controls each.
- Vaughn, first-year midfielder Katie Clare, and sophomore defender Emmy Pascal had three ground balls each.
- First-year goalkeeper Laura O'Connor had six saves.
TURNING POINT
- After UConn tied the game 5-5 at 4:53 of the second, Yale scored the final two goals of the first half and the first two goals of the second half. UConn scored to get within 9-6 before the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to finish the game.
KEY STATS
- The Bulldogs allowed UConn only four shots in the second half. Yale has held two of its last three opponents (Temple and UConn) to 19 or fewer shots for the game.
NOTES
- Yale is 5-0 for the first time since 2014.
- Yale outshot UConn 46-19. That was the most shots in a game for Yale since the Bulldogs registered 52 shots at Hartford Feb. 25, 2020.
- This was the most goals the Huskies have allowed in a game since allowing 17 to Fairfield Feb. 15, 2023.
- Yale was 21-for-21 on clears, the Bulldogs' second straight perfect game on clears (they were 14-for-14 at then-No. 23 Princeton last Saturday).
- Yale enjoyed an 18-9 advantage in draw controls.
- UConn scored only four goals from the field. The other two came on free positions.
