Bulldogs Split Doubleheader With Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Yale baseball team wrapped up an exciting doubleheader with a split on the road against Columbia on Saturday.

In game one, the Bulldogs pulled off an unbelievable comeback to top the Lions 10-8. The Elis trailed 8-0 and by six runs going into the ninth innings. The visitors rallied and Alec Atkinson hit a go-ahead homerun with one out in the ninth to propel the Bulldogs to victory.

Columbia responded with a game two win, defeating Yale 10-3. The Bulldogs now sport a 5-6 conference record and are currently in fifth place. The Lions sit atop the Ivy League with a 9-2 record. 

Game 1 -- Yale 10, Columbia 8

How it Happened
  • Bottom 1st | Columbia got on the board with two runs in the first. 
  • Bottom 2nd | The Lions added five runs to lead 7-0 after two.
  • Bottom 6th | The hosts tacked on another with a solo shot by Skye Selinsky.
  • Top 8th | The Bulldogs got on the board and cut the lead to 8-2 on a towering home run to left by Davis Hanson.
  • Top 9th | The Bulldogs explode for eight runs in the inning to cap off a remarkable comeback. Following RBI singles from Max Imhoff and Hanson, Yale takes advantage of an error by the rightfielder. Trailing by two with two on, Atkinson gave the Bulldogs the lead with a blast over the centerfield wall. The visitors tacked on one more and closed it out in the ninth for the incredible win.
Game Notes
  • Yale snapped a 12-game losing streak to Columbia dating back to 2018.
  • Hanson hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season.
  • Atkinson hit his second dinger of the year.
  • Jeff Pierantoni registered two hits and walked. He has reached base in 14 straight games.
  • Josh Richardson picked up the victory in relief for the Bulldogs. Tate Evans earned his four save of the season.

How it Happened
  • Bottom 2nd | Columbia got on the board with a solo homer.
  • Top 3rd | Hanson hit an RBI single to tie the score at 1-1.
  • Bottom 3rd | The Lions tacked on three more to lead 4-1.
  • Bottom 4th | Lions added another on a second solo shot.
  • Top 6th | Kaiden Dossa recorded two RBIs on a single to center.
  • Bottom 6th | Columbia got the runs right back with an RBI triple.
  • Bottom 8th | The hosts added their final run to cap off the 10-3 victory.
Game Notes
  • Colton Shaw picked up the loss for the Bulldogs but struck out 11 over six innings.
  • Atkinson stole his 15th base of the season.
