No. 14 UConn Edges Yale 3-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team came up just short in its bid to knock off No. 14 UConn on a sunny Sunday afternoon at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex, with the Huskies hanging on for a 3-2 win. The loss drops Yale to 4-2, while UConn improves to 7-1.

  • Yale had the game's first seven shots, but UConn goalie Natalie McKenna made five saves and the other two shots went wide.
  • UConn went ahead 1-0 on a goal by Sophie Perschk at 12:14 of the first.
  • The Huskies extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Madi Herb at 28:04 of the second.
  • Issy Baileff came up with Yale's first defensive save of the season, knocking away a shot by Olivia McKenna five minutes into the third quarter to keep the Bulldogs within two.
  • Poppy Beales tipped in her third goal of the season, pulling Yale within 2-1 at 39:51 of the third. Chiara Picciafuoco got the ball into the circle initially, and Lauren Venter knocked it towards Beales.
  • UConn's Sol Simone scored on a penalty corner less than two minutes after Beales' goal to get the Huskies' lead to 3-1.
  • Yale scored on penalty corner at 56:24 to get within 3-2. Ellie Barlow inserted to Keely Comizio, who set up Whittington for the shot.
  • Yale pulled goalkeeper Alexa Pitts for a kicking back after Whittington's goal, but the Bulldogs could not get the equalizer in the final 3:36.

  • Yale finished with an 11-10 shot advantage.
  • This was the first meeting between these local rivals since 2016.
  • This was the second-most goals for Yale in the last eight meetings between these teams. The Bulldogs scored three in an 8-3 loss Oct. 19, 2014. 
  • Melissa Gonzalez, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey, played for UConn. During her senior year in 2010, she was a first team All-American, Mideast Region Player of the Year, Big East Defensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Honda Sports Award. 
  • Yale assistant coach Belle Bressler played for the Huskies last season while earning her master's degree in sports management. Bressler's sister Julia currently plays for UConn and had an assist Sunday.
