Beales’ OT Game-Winner Sends Yale Past Penn, 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team rallied for a thrilling overtime win vs. Penn on a balmy fall Friday evening at Johnson Field, as Poppy Beales' goal at 65:16 gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 win. Yale improves to 5-2 overall, 1-1 in the Ivy League, while Penn falls to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in Ivy play.
 
Summary
  • Penn took the lead just before the end of the first quarter, as Julia Ryan scored at 14:56 to put the Quakers up 1-0.  
  • Poppy Beales tied the game at 26:56 of the second quarter after receiving a long pass from Keely Comizio. In the middle of the circle, Beales spun around and fired the ball past Penn goalkeeper Ruby de Frees.
  • Colette Staadecker had a critical defensive save with six minutes left in the game, deflecting a Penn penalty corner shot wide.
  • Beales scored the game-winner at 65:16 of overtime. On a breakaway, Chiara Picciafuoco sent the ball ahead to Beales just as Beales crossed into the circle. Beales backhanded a low shot into the far corner of the goal.

  • Beales now has five career game-winning goals, all in the last 13 games. Last season she had four game-winning goals in a span of five games, including three in overtime.
  • This is the fifth time in seven games this season that Yale has held an opponent to one goal or no goals.
  • Yale held Penn scoreless for the final 51:20.
  • Alexa Pitts finished with four saves.
  • Yale's Julia Freedman and Penn's Sophie Freedman, twin sisters, are now 2-2 against each other in college. Both have started the last three games in the Yale-Penn series.
  • The game marked the start of Alum Weekend, with the alums in attendance honored on the field at halftime.
