Penn, Quinnipiac in Town for Alum Weekend

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team hosts a pair of games this weekend as part of Alum Weekend at Johnson Field. The Bulldogs play Ivy League rival Penn Friday (4:00 p.m., ESPN+, International Stream, Live Stats) and then host local rival Quinnipiac Sunday (12:00 p.m., ESPN+, International Stream, Live Stats). 
 
LAST WEEKEND
Yale split last weekend's games, beating Sacred Heart 5-1 on Friday and falling at then-No. 14 UConn 3-2 on Sunday.
 
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Through six games this season, Yale has had nine different players score goals. In each of the previous two seasons, the Bulldogs had eight different goal scorers. The last time Yale had more than nine different goal scorers in a season was 2021 (12 different goal scorers).
 
HELPERS GALORE
Yale ranks ninth in the nation, and first in the Ivy League, in assists per game (3.00).
 
OFFENSIVE OUTBURSTS
Yale's 5-1 win vs. Sacred Heart Sept. 20 marked the second time in five games that the Bulldogs scored five or more goals in a game. Prior to this season Yale had not scored five or more goals in a game in the previous 35 games, dating back to a 6-1 win vs. Hofstra on Oct. 24, 2021.
 
SISTER ACT
Friday's game marks the fourth time that Yale senior midfielder Julia Freedman (Greenwich, Conn.) will face her twin sister, Penn senior midfielder Sophie Freedman. Penn has won two of the three previous meetings, and the last two have been decided by one goal. The sisters have started each of the last two meetings, and Julia had an assist in last year's game. They were teammates at Greenwich Academy, where they helped the Gators win a NEPSAC championship in 2017. Their parents are also Ivy Leaguers; their mother, Tracy, attended Cornell and their father, Michael, played ice hockey at Dartmouth.
 
BARLOW NEARS NEW HIGHS
Just six games into the season, senior midfielder/forward Ellie Barlow (Great Dunmow, Essex, England) has already tied her career high for goals (four). With 11 points (4-3-11), she is one point away from tying her career high for points.
 
SCOUTING PENN
Penn (1-5, 0-1 Ivy League) has scored more than one goal in a game just once. The Quakers have faced four ranked teams in their first six games, and they were outscored 16-2 in those games.They were picked third in the Ivy League preseason poll after going 5-2 in league games last season (tied for second).
 
SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC
Quinnipiac (2-6, 0-1 Big East), which plays at Villanova Friday, has gone scoreless in dropping its last two games. The Bobcats have been held to one goal or no goals in five of their first eight games. The last four games between Yale and QU, and 12 of the last 14, have been decided by one goal. Yale beat the Bobcats 2-1 last season in Hamden.
