Four Different Goal Scorers Help Bulldogs Top Quinnipiac 4-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team completed a weekend sweep at Johnson Field Sunday afternoon, beating local rival Quinnipiac 4-2 on the heels of Friday's 2-1 overtime win vs. Penn. Yale improves to 6-2 overall (1-1 Ivy League) while Quinnipiac falls to 2-8 (0-2 Big East).

Summary
  • Yale took the lead at 23:27 of the second on a goal by Victoria Collee, assisted by Lily Ramsey. Ramsey dribbled through the Quinnipiac defense on the right side of the circle before dropping a pass back to Collee, who fired a hard shot past Quinnipiac goalkeeper Cristina Torres. Six saves by Torres, and a defensive save by Lucia Donati, had kept Yale scoreless prior to that play.
  • Hettie Whittington extended Yale's lead to 2-0, scoring on a penalty stroke at 34:50 of the third.
  • Chiara Picciafuoco scored Yale's third goal, making it 3-0 at 37:31 of the third. She dribbled in from the left side and, just after getting into the circle, slipped a shot past Torres.
  • At 40:09 of the third Lauren Venter deflected in a crossing pass from Poppy Beales for Yale's fourth goal.
  • Quinnipiac got on the scoreboard with a goal by Francisca Eschoyez at 40:35 of the third.
  • A defensive save by Hettie Whittington – Yale's third defensive save of the season – denied one Quinnipiac chance to get within two goals. But the Bobcats followed up that play with a goal from Martina Calveira to trim Yale's lead to 4-2 at 45:41 of the fourth.
  • Alexa Pitts finished with four saves in earning her sixth win of the year.

Notes
  • Yale had a 28-16 shot advantage.
  • This was the third time this season the Bulldogs have scored four or more goals in a game. Prior to this year's season opener (a 6-1 win at Lehigh), Yale had not scored four or more goals in a game since a 4-0 win vs. Dartmouth Oct. 30, 2021.
  • This was the most goals in a game against Quinnipiac for Yale since a 4-3 win Sept. 5, 2010.
  • The previous four games in this series had been decided by one goal. This was the largest margin of victory for any team in the series since a 3-1 Yale win Oct. 14, 2018.
  • Yale is 6-2 for the first time since 1998. The Bulldogs started that season 6-1 and, after dropping to 6-2, won three straight to get to 9-2. Yale eventually finished 15-4 that season.
  • Beales and Picciafuoco have at least one point each in the last three games.
  • With a five-point weekend (2-1-5), Beales has taken over the team lead in points (5-2-12) by one over Ellie Barlow (4-3-11).
  • Venter (2-2-6) has already doubled her point total from last season (1-1-3).
