Win Streak at Five as Bulldogs Win 2-1 at UAlbany

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 16 Yale field hockey team extended its winning streak to five games with a 2-1 win at UAlbany on Alumni Turf Sunday afternoon.

Yale improves to 11-2 overall (3-2 Ivy League), while UAlbany falls to 9-5 (2-1 America East).

Summary
  • Yale took a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior forward Poppy Beales at 9:15 of the first quarter. She dribbled in near the top of the circle, drove right and fired the ball inside the far post.
  • The Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0 on a penalty corner goal by junior back/midfielder Hettie Whittington at 16:26 of the second quarter. First-year back/midfielder Carys Isherwood, the stick stopper, earned the assist. Isherwood shoveled a pass past a Yale player faking a shot and found Whittington for the goal.
  • First-year goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf made four saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. That included two saves in the final 64 seconds, shortly after UAlbany brought in a kicking back for goalkeeper Emma Peeters.
  • Schwarzkopf's diving stop of a penalty corner shot by Mara Kuskes with 38 seconds left ended UAlbany's last chance to tie the game.

Notes
  • Yale finished with a 15-14 shot advantage. The Bulldogs are 11-0 when they outshoot their opponent, 0-2 when they do not.
  • Schwarzkopf finished with nine saves, a season high for her.
  • UAlbany had been 7-0 in the previous seven games in the series, dating back to 2011. This marked the first time in that span that Yale held the Great Danes to fewer than two goals.
