PHILADELPHIA – The No. 14 Yale field hockey team extended its winning streak to six games in dramatic fashion Friday afternoon at Penn's Vagelos Field. After the Quakers tied the game 1-1 late in regulation, the game went to overtime – the third time this season the Bulldogs have gone to OT. After two critical saves by first-year goalkeeper
Amelie Schwarzkopf within the first minute of the extra session, Yale earned a penalty corner and then a penalty stroke. Junior back
Hettie Whittington delivered the game-winner on the stroke for a 2-1 win that moves Yale into third place in the Ivy League standings with one league game remaining in the regular season. The top four teams make the Ivy League Tournament.
Yale improves to 12-2 overall (4-2 Ivy League), while Penn falls to 7-6 (2-4 Ivy League).
Summary
- Schwarzkopf had the biggest play of the first quarter, coming out to deny a shot by Livia Loozen on a breakaway at 12:14.
- The two teams had just two shots each in the scoreless first half.
- Yale went ahead 1-0 in the third quarter at 42:51. Junior back Hettie Whittington sent the ball into the circle from up top and senior forward Poppy Beales got her stick on it to deflect it past Penn goalkeeper Ruby de Frees.
- Penn pulled its goalie with 4:01 left, and the Quakers' Honor Roberts scored 41 seconds later to tie the game 1-1.
- Within the first minute of overtime, first-year goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf was tested twice. She made a diving kick save on a shot by Maxi Aranowitz, then got back up and used her blocker to deflect away a follow-up attempt by Julia Ryan.
- Yale earned a penalty corner with 4:01 left in overtime, and after a violation by the Quakers on the first attempt Penn was left with just two players and a goalkeeper to defend the next attempt. Whittington's shot looked headed for the net but deflected wide off a Penn player's foot.
- Awarded a penalty stroke, Whittington sent the ball just over the outstretched left leg of de Frees, who got a piece of it but not enough to keep it from going in for the game-winner.
