Bulldogs Down University of New Haven 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's soccer team earned its second consecutive win, defeating the University of New Haven 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Reese Stadium. Billy Altirs and Nathan Harmon tallied goals, while Sven Meacham assisted on both scoring efforts.

With the victory, Yale improved to 2-6-2 overall. New Haven dropped to 4-3-3.

"I'm happy with the overall response after a very sluggish start," said Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "The subs that came into the game provided an excellent boost of energy and fight that allowed us to get more control of the game to finish the first half. We competed well in the second half, but needed to be better on the ball when we won it."

How It Happened

  • 2' | New Haven struck first on a goal by Andrew Miranda. 1-0 UNH

  • 18' | The Bulldogs nearly tied the game off a corner kick. Owen Bull's header was blocked at the goal line by a Chargers defender. The ensuing rebound attempt by Simon Adjakple was saved by goalkeeper Shane Antao.

  • 33' | YALE GOAL! Meacham dribbled down the near sideline and beat several Chargers defenders before cutting into the box. He delivered a centering pass to Altirs, who finished with his right foot to tie the game. 1-1

  • 41' | YALE GOAL! The Bulldogs took the lead on a goal just before halftime. Meacham once again served as the facilitator, crossing a ball into the box that Harmon finished for his first collegiate goal. 2-1 YALE

Game Notes

  • Tuesday's matchup was the first between Yale and New Haven as Division I opponents.

  • The Bulldogs earned their first winning streak since a four-game stretch from Sept. 21–Oct. 2 last season.

  • Meacham was outstanding, factoring into both Yale goals. He recorded his first multi-point game with two assists and has now tallied at least one point in three consecutive games.

  • Altirs scored his second goal of the season.

  • Harmon notched his first collegiate goal.

Up Next

"We need to keep working on finding the right balance of being calm and composed on the ball when we have it while not losing a competitive spirit and defensive edge and discipline," Stannard said. "If we can find that right balance, we can really take another step forward."

The Bulldogs will play on the road at Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m.
