PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Yale women's basketball team grabbed an early lead and held it for more than 20 minutes at Providence Friday night, including having a 34-29 edge at halftime. But the Friars went on a 13-5 run at the start of the third and turned the game in their favor. PC went on to finish off a 75-64 win.
After falling behind 4-0, Yale ran off eight straight points. The Bulldogs eventually led by as many as eight in the second quarter, and their advantage was five at halftime.
Providence rallied to tie it 39-39 early in the third, then went ahead on a layup by Teneisia Brown at 5:22. The Friars would not trail again, though the Bulldogs got within one with 3:13 left in the quarter and had the chance to re-take the lead. A Yale turnover at 2:43 enabled the Friars to stay in front, and they went into the fourth up 52-49.
The Friars got their lead into double digits on a layup by Sabou Gueye with 3:35 left in the fourth, and Yale got no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Yale falls to 0-5 (0-0 Ivy League) while Providence improves to 4-1 (0-0 Big East).
STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Sophomore guards Marisa Chapman and Ke'iara Odume led Yale in scoring with 16 points each. That was a career high for Odume and a season high for Chapman. Sophomore guard Ciniya Moore added 14 points.
- Chapman's team-high eight rebounds were also a season best for her. Junior forward Luisa Vydrova added seven rebounds and first-year forward Sophia Gibson added six.
- Chapman and Moore tied for the team lead in assists with three each.
- Moore had a team-best three steals.
KEY STAT
- Providence shot .548 in the second half, including a 5-for-5 performance on three pointers.
NOTES
- Yale shot .800 (12-for-15) from the free throw line, the third time in five games this season that the Bulldogs have shot that well or better from the charity stripe.
- A pair of first-years, forward Dorka Kastl and guard Olivia Kim, made their first career starts. Kastl scored her first career points at 8:01 of the first on a jumper in the lane.
- Odume committed just one turnover in 36 minutes.
