Bulldogs Advance Two Boats to Grand Finals, Conclude Racing at IRA National Championships

CAMDEN, N.J. – The Yale heavyweight crew team capped off a competitive weekend at the 122nd Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships, held on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. All three Yale boats advanced out of Friday's heats to the semifinals, with both the second varsity (2V) and third varsity (3V) crews earning spots in Sunday's grand finals.

Varsity Eight (1V)

  • Yale's first varsity eight opened its weekend with a second-place finish in its Friday heat, clocking in at 5:36.06 behind Harvard (5:35.05) to advance to Saturday's semifinal. The Bulldogs finished fourth in the semifinal, just missing out on the grand final.
  • In Sunday's petite final, the 1V finished fifth with a time of 5:28.01, placing behind California (5:24.04), Northeastern (5:25.45), Stanford (5:27.11), and Penn (5:27.32). The result secured Yale an 11th-place national finish.

Second Varsity (2V)

  • The second varsity boat advanced to the semifinals after placing second in its Friday heat with a time of 5:43.97, trailing only Cal (5:40.36). In Saturday's A/B semifinal, Yale significantly improved its time to 5:28.74, finishing second and securing a spot in the grand final.
  • On championship Sunday, the Bulldogs placed sixth overall with a time of 5:37.18 in the final race.

Third Varsity (3V)

  • Yale's third varsity began the regatta with a strong showing, winning its Friday heat in 5:42.57 to earn a place in Saturday's A/B semifinal. There, the Bulldogs placed third in 5:38.51, qualifying for the grand final.
  • In their final race of the weekend, the 3V crew delivered its fastest time of the regatta—5:28.01—and finished fifth overall.

Up Next
The Bulldogs will now turn their focus to the 158th Yale-Harvard Regatta, taking place in New London, Conn., this coming weekend. The fourth varsity will race on Friday, June 6 at 6 p.m., while the first, second, and third varsity boats will compete on the evening of Saturday, June 7.
