Beales, Dominant Defense Deliver 2-1 Win vs. Hofstra

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team held Hofstra without a shot for the final 48:30 and senior forward Poppy Beales scored a pair of goals as the Bulldogs beat the Pride 2-1 Friday evening at Johnson Field. 
 
Yale improves to 3-0 overall (0-0 in the Ivy League), while Hofstra falls to 3-2 (0-0 CAA). 
 
Summary
  • Senior forward Poppy Beales scored on the first shot of the game, 48 seconds in, turning and firing one through the legs of Hofstra goalkeeper Luci Hollister. First-year back Carys Isherwood earned her first career assist on the play.
  • Hofstra tied the game on a goal by Tess Satterfield at 11:30.
  • Beales answered less than three minutes later, tracking down a loose ball on the far left side and backhanding in the go-ahead goal. Sophomore forward/midfielder Chiara Picciafuoco assisted on the play.
  • Hofstra had two penalty corners – one in the second and one in the fourth – and could not get a shot off on either one.
  • Hofstra went with a kicking back for the final three minutes, and after a green card on Yale with 2:13 left, the Pride had a two-player advantage in the field. Still, the Bulldogs did not allow a shot.
  • Hofstra was able to possess the ball deep in Yale territory in the final minutes, but the Bulldogs eventually gained possession in the corner and killed off the game's final seconds to seal the win.

  • Beales now has six career game-winning goals. 
  • This was the third multiple-goal game of Beales' career.
  • Yale finished with a 29-5 shot advantage and a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal.
  • First-year goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf played the first half and finished with two saves. First-year Maddie Shepherd played the final 30 minutes.
  • The Bulldogs are now 8-1 in their last nine home games.
  • This is the second straight season Yale has started with three wins. The last time Yale started a season 4-0 was 1995.
