NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After taking down No. 19 Monmouth 3-1 on a sunny and hot Sunday afternoon at Johnson Field, the Yale field hockey team is 4-0 for the first time since 1995. Sophomore forward/back/midfielder
Ymre Massée scored a pair of goals and senior forward
Poppy Beales added one as the Bulldogs enjoyed a decisive offensive advantage (22-9 in shots, 13-4 in shots on goal) against a Monmouth team that came in undefeated and averaging 6.4 goals per game. The Bulldogs have now outshot their four opponents this season by a combined total of 119-34, finishing each game with at least 13 more shots than the opposition.
Yale improves to 4-0 overall (0-0 in the Ivy League), while Monmouth falls to 5-1 (0-0 in the CAA).
Summary
- The first quarter was scoreless, but the Bulldogs had the best scoring chances. Monmouth goalie Charlie Bowman made a kick save on senior forward Poppy Beales on a breakaway, then denied a follow-up attempt by senior forward/midfielder Lauren Venter.
- Yale went ahead 1-0 at 16:33 in the second quarter, as Beales deflected in a shot by junior back/midfielder Hettie Whittington on a penalty corner.
- Monmouth tied the game just over six minutes later when Keely Bowers scored on a penalty corner.
- Yale went back ahead 2-1 on a penalty corner goal by sophomore forward/back/midfielder Ymre Massée at 36:18. After inserting, Massée was wide open at the near post and Whittington found her for the goal.
- Massée scored again on a similar play at 46:03 in the fourth quarter to get Yale's lead to 3-1.
- A yellow card on Yale with 7:01 left added to the challenge for the Bulldogs, but they allowed only one Monmouth shot (which was blocked) while down a player.
- Yale would have made the score 4-1 with less than three minutes left were it not for a terrific save by Bowman on Venter.
- The Bulldogs kept up the offensive pressure until the end. A shot by sophomore forward/midfielder Chiara Picciafuoco with 1:30 left hit the post, and a shot by Beales right after that was blocked.
