Seniors Shine as Bulldogs Top Columbia 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team celebrated Senior Night in style Friday at Johnson Field. All three seniors – forward Tabs Collier, midfielder/forward Emma Ramsey and back Hettie Whittington – started, and the class combined for two goals and an assist as the Bulldogs beat Columbia 3-1.

Yale improves to 7-2 overall (2-2 Ivy League), while Columbia falls to 5-4 (2-2 Ivy League).

Summary
  • Yale capitalized on its third penalty corner of the first quarter. After inserting, junior midfielder Kaitlyn Chang maneuvered into position to receive a pass from senior back Hettie Whittington and fire a shot on goal. Columbia keeper Margot Houle got a piece of it, but the ball trickled behind her and went in to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at 10:45.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf made her first save with eight minutes left in the second quarter, using her blocker to deflect away a shot by Jacinta Solari Etcheberry.
  • Columbia tied the game on a penalty corner goal by Solari Etcheberry with 1:01 left before halftime.
  • Yale retook the lead on a goal at 35:03. First-year back Emilia Puddicombe drove baseline and forced Houle to come out and make a save. The rebound trickled past Houle, and senior midfielder/forward Emma Ramsey slammed it home for her fourth goal of the year.
  • Yale scored another penalty corner goal at 43:05. Junior back Issy Baileff's shot was deflected in by Whittington. That was Whittington's first goal of the season.
  • A save by Schwarzkopf on a Columbia penalty corner with eight minutes left denied the Lions' last good chance to get back in the game.

Notes

  • Yale outshot Columbia 9-0 in the first quarter.
  • Ramsey continues to add to her career-best totals in goals (four) and points (13).
