NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- First year Samson Frey of the Yale women's ice hockey team has been named a semifinalist for Goalie of the Year by the Women's Hockey Commissioners Association, as announced by the organization on Friday afternoon.
Twelve goalies from four NCAA Division I conferences have advanced from a "watch list" of 31 outstanding netminders. Voting was conducted by a national panel of coaches, administrators, and media members. Frey is the only first-year on the list and one of four goaltenders from ECAC Hockey.
Frey is the first Yale goaltender since 2023 to be named a national semifinalist.
Frey has been remarkable for the Bulldogs in net since taking over the starting role at the beginning of January. The New York native posted a perfect 10-0-0 record during the month, a .950 save percentage, and a 1.07 goals-against average. Frey recorded three shutouts and has helped Yale to an 11-game winning streak, its best since 2023. The first year leads the country in goals-against average (.969) and is second in save percentage (.955).
Three finalists will be announced during the conference championships, and the winner will be announced during this year's NCAA Frozen Four in Minneapolis, Minn.
