NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Both teams combined for 40 runs as Yale softball and the Cornell Big Red split a doubleheader to open Ivy League play. Yale moved to 6-11 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Big Red moved to 6-8 and 1-1.
Game 1: Yale 14, Cornell 4
- T1 – Cornell struck in its first at-bat as Lauren Holt hit a solo home run to center field. (COR 1, YAL 0)
- B1 – Back-to-back walks from Ella Gandolfo and Elena Ohe to open the inning set up an early opportunity for Yale. A groundout moved the pair to second and third, respectively, and Grace Westmoreland lined a double up the middle to score both and give Yale the lead. The Bulldogs never trailed again. (YAL 2, COR 1)
- T2 – Emma Taylor retired two of the three batters via strikeouts, setting up a massive bottom half for Yale.
- B2 – The scoring floodgates opened as the Bulldogs plated 11 runs on 10 hits. Gandolfo extended Yale's lead to three with a two-RBI single to right field. Two batters later, Ava Kainrath and Westmoreland delivered back-to-back singles that each scored a run. With two outs, the Bulldogs rallied as singles from Jane Littleton, Isabella Fortini, and Gandolfo brought three more runs across the plate. After Cornell switched pitchers, Yale's offense continued to pour it on, adding three runs on three straight singles. (YAL 13, COR 1)
- T4 – Cornell generated some momentum in the fourth, adding three runs on a triple. (YAL 13, COR 4)
- B4 – Yale's Libby Peoples singled through the infield to extend the lead back to 10. (YAL 14, COR 4)
- T5 – The Bulldogs closed out the first game of the day with three up and three down to seal the victory.
Game 2: Cornell 13, Yale 9
- T1 – Cornell had a similar start in game two, striking first on a solo home run. (COR 1, YAL 0)
- B1 – With one out and runners in scoring position, Grace Westmoreland drove in a run on a fielder's choice. (YAL 1, COR 1)
- T3 – Cornell had a big third inning, scoring four runs on three hits to extend its lead. (COR 5, YAL 1)
- T4 – The Big Red struck again in the fourth, making it an eight-run game after scoring four runs on four hits and taking advantage of a pair of Bulldog errors. (COR 9, YAL 1)
- T5 – Four more runs crossed the plate for Cornell as the Big Red took a commanding 12-run lead. (COR 13, YAL 1)
- B5 – With its back against the wall, Yale's bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning. Isabella Fortini and Ella Gandolfo reached base to put runners in scoring position. An infield grounder scored Fortini to get things rolling. Westmoreland followed with a single to left to bring home Gandolfo for the second run of the inning. With two outs, Libby Peoples ripped a triple to center field that cleared the bases and made it an eight-run game. In the next at-bat, Demi Donahoe delivered a triple of her own to score Peoples. - B6 – Yale made another offensive push in its second-to-last at-bat. Elena Ohe drew a walk before Ava Kainrath blasted a two-run home run to center field to make it 13-8.
- B7 – The Bulldogs added a ninth run in the final inning as Peoples led off with a triple and Donahoe followed with an RBI, but Cornell's defense held on for the victory.
Notes
- Grace Westmoreland led the way, going 6-for-8 (.750) with a triple, a double, six RBIs, and two runs scored.
- First-year Ava Kainrath had a career day, batting 5-for-8 (.625) with five RBIs, two runs, a double, and her first career home run.
- Ella Gandolfo and Libby Peoples also turned in strong performances over the two games. Both batted .500, with Gandolfo going 3-for-6 with five runs scored, three RBIs, and two walks. Peoples finished 4-for-8 with two triples, three RBIs, and two runs scored.
- Emma Taylor picked up her fourth win of the season in the five-inning Game 1 victory, tossing a complete game with six strikeouts.
- As a team across the two games, the Bulldogs posted a .456 batting average, a .684 slugging percentage, and 23 RBIs.
- It was the most runs the Bulldogs have scored in a single game since April 3, 2023 when they posted 16 runs against Cornell.
