DERBY, Conn. -- The Yale lightweights made the only home race of 2026 a memorable one on Saturday morning, claiming the Dodge Cup and the Colgan Cup thanks to a win in the 1V.
The day began with a win for Penn in the 2V race and ended with a win for Penn in the 3V/4V race – but in between, Yale delivered a dramatic win in the 1V race. That race was close between Penn and Yale throughout. The Quakers had a slim lead heading into the final 400m, but the Bulldogs made one last push and crossed the finish line slightly more than a second before Penn did.
The win in the 1V earned the Dodge Cup for Yale. This was Yale's first Dodge Cup win since 2022. The Bulldogs also claimed the Colgan Cup, which is based on points from all three races. The Bulldogs and the Quakers finished with a total of 30 points each; Yale's win in the 1V was the tiebreaker.
Penn's 1V had entered the day ranked No. 2 in the most recent IRCA/IRA poll, with a second-place finish against No. 1 Harvard on Apr. 4 the only previous blemish on the Quakers' record this season.
Yale's 1V now has wins over Columbia, Penn and Navy to its credit this season. Yale faces Dartmouth for the Durand Cup next Saturday in Hanover.
