NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale men's basketball captain
Nick Townsend is set to compete at the 72
nd Annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament this week at Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Va., from Apr. 15-18.
Every year since 1953, the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament has invited 64 senior college basketball players from across the nation to compete before professional scouts. Eight teams of eight players play a 12-game tournament over four days, with each player hoping to achieve their dream of becoming a professional basketball player.

John Poulakidas '25 both competed at the event last year, and are now in the NBA, with Mbeng on the Utah Jazz and Poulakidas on the Dallas Mavericks.
Townsend, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, put together an outstanding senior season. He paced Yale with 16.3 points per game, ranking eighth in the conference, and also finished third in rebounding (7.4 per game) and second in assists (4.3 per game). The Chappaqua, New York native reached double figures in 28 contests and posted five double doubles. A two-time First Team All-Ivy selection, Townsend has twice been named Ivy League Player of the Week this season and earned USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week honors. He is also coming off a strong 14-point performance at the NABC Reese's All-Star Game, where he was one of six West players in double figures in a 110–93 win over the East.
