HANOVER, N.H. -- The Yale lightweights captured the Durand Cup Saturday morning on the swift Connecticut River, edging Dartmouth by one second in the 1V for the dramatic victory.
Â
A day of fast racing began with Yale claiming the top two spots in the 3V4+; Dartmouth then won the 2V by a 2.3 second margin.
Â
The drama for the 1V race built as the race was delayed an hour after Yale hit a log on the warm-up to the start and needed to replace the damaged skeg. After the repair, the crews warmed up again and got aligned for another classic dual race on the Connecticut.Â
Â
Dartmouth took the lead early and forced the Elis to row from behind through the body of the race. Yale held a slim lead with 500 left. Dartmouth pushed hard to close the gap but the Bulldogs eventually came away with a 1.1 second win in a race that broke the five-minute mark.
Â
Yale's Durand Cup win ends a streak of two straight wins for Dartmouth in the series; prior to that the Bulldogs had won it every year from 2013 on.
Â
Yale's 1V now has wins over Columbia, Dartmouth, Navy and Penn to its credit this season. The Bulldogs face Harvard and Princeton next Saturday in Cambridge for the Goldthwait Cup and the Vogel Cup.
