NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After helping the No. 13 Yale women's lacrosse team to a 14-13 win vs. Harvard at Reese Stadium that clinched at least a share of the Ivy League title last Saturday, junior defender
Katie Clare (Bayport, N.Y.) has been named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week. The league announced the award Monday afternoon.
Clare had five caused turnovers (the most in a game by any Ivy League player this season) and four ground balls Saturday. That included one of the biggest plays of the game. With the Crimson in Yale's zone and threatening to tie the score in the final minutes, Clare caused a turnover on Harvard's final possession. She then got the ground ball and finished the clear to help seal the one-goal win.
For the season, Clare is sixth in the league in caused turnovers (19) and 10th in ground balls (24).
Clare, who has started all 54 games of her Yale career, was a two-time USA Lacrosse honorable mention All-America selection at Bayport-Blue Point High School. She also played for the Long Island Yellow Jackets.
Yale (12-2, 6-0 Ivy League) plays at RV Cornell Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the regular season finale. The Bulldogs have clinched the No. 1 seed in the Ivy League Tournament, which they will host at Reese Stadium May 1 and 3.
