GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Yale Lightweight Crew opened competition at the 124th running of the IRA National Championships Friday on Lake Natoma. The Bulldogs had a pair of eights and a four in action on the first of three days of racing.
The day began with the 2V heats, with the No. 9 ranked Bulldogs placing fifth in the first heat. That put them in Sunday's Petite Final, set for 10:04 a.m. PT. Also in Sunday's Petite Final will be No. 7 Columbia and No. 10 MIT. The top three in each of Friday's heats advanced to Sunday's Grand Final.
Competing in the second heat Friday morning, the No. 7 ranked Yale 1V was in third through the first 500 meters but slipped back to fourth at the halfway mark. The Bulldogs were just over two seconds behind third-place MIT at that point, and could not make up the difference in the final 1,000 meters. They finished fourth, ahead of fifth-place Navy by a fraction of a second, and will compete in the Petite Final Sunday at 11:26 a.m. PT. There they will face No. 8 Georgetown, No. 9 Columbia and No. 10 Navy. The top three in each of Friday's heats advanced to Sunday's Grand Final.
Yale's four began its day of competition with time trials, then moved on to the semifinals later in the day. The Bulldogs had placed ninth in the time trial, putting them in a semi with No. 1 Penn, No. 4 Harvard, No. 5 Navy and No. 8 Columbia. They placed fifth in the semis and will next compete in Saturday's 10:56 a.m. PT Petite Final. The top three in the two semis moved on to Saturday's 11:12 a.m. Grand Final.
