GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Yale Lightweight Crew wrapped up competition at the 124th running of the IRA National Championships Sunday on Lake Natoma. The Bulldogs' eights were both in their respective Petite Finals, with the 1V placing first in its (seventh overall) and the 2V placing second in its (eighth overall).
The 2V, ranked No. 9 coming into the weekend, was first to race on Sunday. The Bulldogs took on No. 7 Columbia and No. 10 MIT. Leading for the majority of the race, Yale was edged at the finish line by a hard-charging Columbia squad – the Lions finished in 6:04.9 to Yale's 6:05.4. MIT was third (6:10.1).
The No. 7 ranked Yale 1V wound up in a heated battle with No. 8 Georgetown in their Petite Final. The Hoyas led by a fraction of a second through the first half of the race, but the Bulldogs pulled ahead by the 1500m mark and then held off a late Hoya charge. Yale (5:58.5) beat Georgetown (5:59.1) by less than a second, with No. 10 Navy taking third (6:02.74) by five-hundredths of a second over No. 9 Columbia (6:02.79).
Yale also had a four at IRAs. Competition in that event concluded Saturday, with the Bulldogs placing third in the Petite Final and ninth overall.
