No. 18 Yale Edges Fairfield 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf made eight saves to lead the No. 18 Yale field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Fairfield Friday night at Johnson Field.
 
Yale improves to 3-0 overall (0-0 Ivy League), while Fairfield falls to 2-2 (0-0 CAA).
 
Summary
  • Fairfield earned a penalty corner with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter and had the chance to take the lead, but sophomore goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf stacked the pads and made a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless. She finished the quarter with six saves.
  • Yale earned its first penalty corner of the game at 13:01 of the second. Junior forward/midfielder Chiara Picciafuoco inserted to sophomore back/midfielder Carys Isherwood for the stick stop, and junior back Issy Baileff – the reigning Ivy League Co-Defensive Player of the Week – fired one low past Fairfield keeper Georgia McDade for a 1-0 lead at 17:06.
  • Yale earned a penalty corner with 2.1 seconds left in the second quarter. McDade denied a shot from point-blank range by Picciafuoco to keep Yale's lead at 1-0 heading into halftime.
  • Yale went up 2-0 at 10:57 of the third. McDade stopped Picciafuoco's initial shot from close range but the ball spun off her shoulder and trickled in.
  • Fairfield answered with a goal from forward Camille Perlov at 8:52 of the third to get back within one.
  • The Stags had the chance to tie the game on a penalty corner with 2:34 remaining in the third, but after first-year back Emilia Puddicombe blocked a shot Schwarzkopf made a pair of saves to keep Yale in the lead.
  • Yale incurred two green cards in a span of 17 seconds in the fourth. The Bulldogs gained possession and killed much of the clock, then saw Fairfield get a green card of its own to bring the two-player advantage to an early end.
  • Yale earned a penalty corner with 8:58 to play. A defensive save by Fairfield midfielder Kylie Corcoran on a shot by Puddicombe, followed by a save from McDade on a shot by first-year midfielder/forward Angelina Che, kept the Bulldogs' lead at one.
