Three-Goal Third Quarter Lifts No. 18 Yale Past UC Davis 3-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 18 Yale field hockey team broke open a scoreless game with three third-quarter goals en route to beating UC Davis 3-0 on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Johnson Field. Junior back Issy Baileff scored a pair of goals in a span of 78 seconds, both on penalty corners, after a goal by junior midfielder Victoria Collee had given the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Yale improves to 4-0 overall (0-0 Ivy League), while UC Davis falls to 2-4 (0-0 MPSF).

Summary
  • Yale had a 2-1 shot advantage in a scoreless first quarter.
  • Yale earned a penalty corner less than three minutes into the second and nearly took the lead. UC Davis goalkeeper Addy Collingwood made a kick save on a blast by junior midfielder Victoria Collee, then kicked away junior forward/midfielder Chiara Picciafuoco's attempt at a follow-up.
  • A defensive save by UC Davis midfielder Mia Edwards kept Yale off the board at 8:30 of the second. The Aggies also denied a Yale corner attempt shortly after that.
  • The Bulldogs took the lead 31 seconds into the third. Collee took a crossing pass from senior midfielder/forward Emma Ramsey and flicked it in.
  • A defensive save by senior back Hettie Whittington on a UC Davis penalty corner at 36:34 kept Yale's lead intact.
  • Baileff scored a pair of penalty corner goals in a span of 78 seconds later in the third. The first came at 38:41 and the second came at 39:59. Both goals were assisted by Picciafuoco and Ramsey.
  • A trio of kick saves by sophomore goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf  on UC Davis penalty corners in the fourth kept the shutout intact.

Notes
  • This is the second straight season Yale has started with at least four straight wins. Last year the Bulldogs won the first five.
  • This was Schwarzkopf's second shutout of the season, and the fourth of her career. She currently leads the Ivy League in save percentage (.900) and is second in goals-against average (0.50).
  • Collee's goal was her first of the year.
