Bulldogs Defeat UConn to Win East Coast Challenge

Yale has won its first six matches to start 2026

STORRS, Conn. – The Bulldogs defeated UConn 3-1 to take the East Coast Challenge and earn their first road victory of the season.  With the win, Yale extended its season-opening win streak to six.

Laurece Abraham was named East Coast Challenge MVP, while Skylar Jackson and Ava Poinsett were all-tournament selections.

Set 1 (25-15, Yale)
  • The Bulldogs picked up where they left off from yesterday's victory with a 9-2 start to the match.
  • Team captain Laurece Abraham provided a kill and Ava Poinsett followed with an ace to give Yale a 16-8 lead.
  • Poinsett's fourth and final kill of the set gave Yale its largest lead at 24-13.
Set 2 (25-21, UConn)
  • Skylar Jackson gave Yale an early 6-3 lead.
  • UConn used a 6-0 run to create separation and take a 16-11 edge in the set.
  • Betsy Goodenow used one of her four aces to bring Yale within one at 17-16.  UConn scored the next two points and never trailed the rest of frame.
Set 3 (25-22, Yale)
  • Down two, Yale scored four straight – bookended with a block and kill from Abraham – to take a 17-15 lead.
  • The set was tied three more times after that Abraham kill.
  • Yale held on and scored the final two points of the set after an attack error from the Huskies and set point from Cam Bolane.
Set 4 (25-23, Yale)
  • Goodenow served up another ace gave Yale an early 10-6 lead.
  • Kalyssa Taggart and Poinsett went back to back with kills to give the Bulldogs a 14-9 lead.
  • UConn responded to take a 21-20 lead but the Bulldogs didn't falter.
  • Yale scored five of the last seven points with two kills from Poinsett, another from Bolane and a service ace from Yuri Park.
Notes
  • Abraham finished with 12 kills and averaged 3.7 kills in the East Coast Challenge and earned MVP of the event.
  • Jackson averaged 2.30 kills and 3.10 digs on the weekend.  
  • Poinsett finished today's match with a team-high 17 kills and averaged 2.90 for the weekend. 
  • Bolane had seven kills and hit .400 for the match.
  • Arya Jue had a team-best 14 digs, while Jackson had 13.
  • Yale has started the season 6-0 for the first time since 1998.
  • The Bulldogs' win today marked the first non-conference loss at home for UConn since September 2023.
