Bulldogs Outlast Hofstra on Opening Night

Besty Goodenow produced a team-high 17 kills

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale volleyball team opened the season with a come-from-behind five-set victory over Hofstra at John J. Lee Amphitheater on Friday night.  The scores of the match were 24-26, 18-25, 25-23, 27-25 and 15-7.

Set 1 (26-24, Hofstra)
  • Betsy Goodenow, who had a team-high three kills in the opening set, snapped a 22-22 tie before Hofstra closed out the set.
  • Yale held off set point after a Hofstra service ace.
  • Hofstra scored the final two points of the set.
Set 2 (25-18, Hofstra)
  • Hofstra hit .464 in the second.
  • Maria Alfonso broke a 4-4 tie and jumpstarted a 5-1 run for Hofstra.
  • Goodenow had five kills on seven swings without an error in the set.
Set 3 (25-23, Yale)
  • Yale came alive in third and four different Bulldogs had at least two kills.
  • Trailing 18-17, Yale scored five of the next six points.
  • Cam Bolane notched a kill to extend Yale's lead to 23-21.
  • A service error brought Yale to set point before Goodenow finished it off.
Set 4 (27-25, Yale)
  • Ava Poinsett went for five kills on five swings in the set.
  • Kalyssa Taggart led the Bulldogs with four digs in the frame.
  • Captain Laurece Abraham had three kills, two blocks and a dig in the set.
  • Trailing 24-22, the Bulldogs scored three straight points capped by a block from Abraham and Goodenow.
Set 5 (15-7, Yale)
  • Yale jumped out to a 5-2 lead and never trailed the rest of the set.
  • The Bulldogs scored six of the final eight points of the set.
  • Bolane had four kills on five swings without an error. 
Notes
  • With the victory, Yale head coach Erin Appleman earned her 399th win at the helm of the Bulldogs.
  • Goodenow led the way for the Bulldogs with 17 kills – including the 750th of her Yale career midway through the match.
  • Arya Jue had a team-high 18 digs, while Skylar Jackson had 13 – including six in the third set.
  • Bolane finished with 12 kills and hit .476 for the match.
Up next
  • The Bulldogs play two matches tomorrow.  Yale will face Manhattan at 1 p.m., and close out the weekend with against Santa Clara at 7 p.m.
  • Santa Clara defeated Manhattan 3-0 earlier tonight.
