NEW HAVEN, Conn. - When the Yale men's soccer team walks off the
Reese Stadium field for the final time in 2009 following Saturday's
game with Brown, they should take a good look around. Because in
2010, the stadium will have a much different look. Construction of
Phase II of the Reese Stadium Project will commence on Nov. 9 and
will consist of a new stadium structure which will include four
team rooms, expanded bleachers, a press box, VIP seating areas and
an entryway plaza. It will also feature the names of all former
soccer and lacrosse players on the archways leading into the
stadium. Kickoff for the final home game of 2009 is slated
for 4:30 p.m.
Prior to kickoff, Yale's five seniors - Jon Carlos, Travis
Chulick, Kevin Pope, Jordan Raybould and Justin Song - will be
honored. During their careers, the five have combined to play in
266 games and help the Bulldogs to nearly 30 victories.
"The senior class is the foundation for our `team-first'
approach and has been instrumental in setting a high standard for
technical skill, hard work and team spirit," said Yale head coach
Brian Tompkins. "The most impressive thing about every one of
them is the degree to which they have grown as leaders on and off
the field and the remarkable contributions they have made as role
models and mentors for their teammates. They have represented
Yale with great distinction and they will be missed by players and
coaches alike."
Carlos has played in every game during his career. This year he
is tied for the team-lead with four assists, all of which have come
in Yale wins. In his junior year, he scored both of his goals in a
victory over Stony Brook and assisted on the game-winning goal in
overtime against Army. In his sophomore year, he was fourth on the
team in goals and points and was named the Ivy League Player of the
Week following a win over Columbia, and in his freshmen year, he
earned honorable mention All-Ivy recognition after starting 16
games.
Chulick has been Yale's starting goalkeeper in each of the last
two years. As a senior this fall he has started 14 games, posting
five victories, including a shutout of Central Connecticut. As a
junior, he played every minute of every game, finishing second in
the Ivy League in save percentage and saves and tied for second in
shutouts. One of his top performances came against 15th-ranked
UConn when he made seven saves as the Bulldogs played a scoreless
tie with the Huskies. His first career start came in his sophomore
year and he responded by shutting out Stony Brook. He earned his
first victory in his freshman year by playing the second half
against Albany.
Pope has made important contributions since the day he arrived
in New Haven. This season, despite battling an injury, he has
played in 12 games. As a junior, he had a goal and an assist in
Yale's victory over Columbia and had the game-winning goal against
Stony Brook. In his sophomore year, he led the Bulldogs in goals
and points. He scored in back-to-back games against UConn and
Columbia. As a rookie, he appeared in 11 games and made his first
career start against Drake.
Raybould is the second member of his family to serve as the
captain of the Bulldogs joining his older brother Ryan. He has
started 57 games in his career and all three of his goals have been
game-winners. This season he has been the undisputed leader of the
team, while appearing in all 15 games. As a junior he was one of
only three players to start all 17 games and finished tied for
second on the team in assists. In his sophomore year, he earned
honorable mention All-Ivy recognition after notching all of his
points in Ivy games. He made an immediate impact as a freshman and
was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week following a win over
Princeton.
Song has appeared in 50 games in his career. This season he has
helped anchor Yale's defense and tallied an assist against SMU. As
a junior he was the recipient of the Frank Dunne Award as the
team's most improved player after starting nine games and notching
his first career point, an assist in a victory over Quinnipiac. In
his sophomore year he appeared in nine games and as a freshman he
started the first game of his career against Marist.
The Bears (8-2-5, 3-2 Ivy) have been nationally ranked for much
of the season and have outscored their opponents 26-13. Sean Rosa
leads the team in assists (6) and points (14). Nick Elenz-Martin
has a team-high five goals.
Last year in Providence, Aden Farina-Henry and Sam Post scored
